TCCJ plans news writing workshops

The Texas Center for Community Journalism is planning more traveling workshops, starting with a stop in Navasota this spring.

The center will present its Traveling News Writing Workshop on Thursday, May 9, in downtown Navasota. “We are thrilled to partner with fellow journalism schools across the state to bring more free TCCJ training to your neck of the woods,” TCCJ director Austin Lewter said.

The workshop will start at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Lewter says the agenda will include a back-to-basics approach to lead writing and the inverted pyramid.

“We’ll also touch on libel and legal issues, health care reporting, integrating open data sources into your reporting, interview techniques and much more,” he said. “These workshops are designed to give you practical skills to improve your writing immediately.”

“As always, these workshops are absolutely free,” Lewter said. “Your tuition, your materials and your meals will be free.”

Housed at Tarleton State University, the Texas Center for Community Journalism is dedicated to provide training and resources to community newsrooms across Texas.
