Beginning next year, the Texas Press Association midwinter convention will be the annual meeting of the association, during which election and installation of officers and all other official business will be conducted.
Some changes will begin with the January 2019 midwinter meeting, which begins the transition period.
As a result, changes to the group’s bylaws are necessary. The proposed changes will be presented to the membership at the general membership meeting at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 23, during the final Summer Leadership Retreat in Montgomery. Complete text of the changes is available in the eEdition of the June edition of the Texas Press Messenger, available online at http://texaspress.com/texas-press-messenger.
Beginning in January 2020, TPA board elections will be held at the midwinter convention, when officers will be installed. Terms of office will begin Feb. 1 each year and end Jan. 31 of the following year.
During the transition, the officers elected and taking office at the last summer meeting this month will serve extended terms of office from June 30, 2018 until Jan. 31, 2020.
There also will be changes to the Texas Better Newspaper Contest. Awards will be given at the January convention beginning in 2020, with the contest period beginning each year in September and ending in August. During the transition, the contest period for the awards presented in 2020 will be extended for six months to run from Jan. 1, 2018 until Aug. 31, 2019.
