Roy McQueen, 112th president, had been in the newspaper business for 30 years when he was elected Texas Press Association president.

He began his career as a sports reporter for the Andrews County News in 1959 when he was in the eighth grade. While in high school, he worked for the semiweekly and filled the role of news editor his senior year.

When he graduated from high school in 1963, McQueen was awarded a journalism scholarship from West Texas Press Association, of which he later became president (1976-77). McQueen attended North Texas State University. The following year, he commuted to Odessa College and worked full time at the News.

In 1965 he transferred to Texas Tech and worked for the Slaton Slatonite handling both news and advertising.

In 1966 McQueen joined the editorial staff of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in sports, both as a reporter and deskman. He also served one year as managing editor of the University Daily and taught the reporting and editing lab for the school’s journalism department.

Upon graduation from Texas Tech in 1968, McQueen became publisher of the Seminole Sentinel. In October of that same year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and took a leave of absence, serving as a public information specialist and editor of the Fort Bliss Monitor. He also spent nine months as an information specialist in Germany.

In 1970 McQueen returned to the Seminole Sentinel.

In 1976 he and associates in Roberts Publishing Co. purchased the Snyder Daily News and he serves as publisher. He received TPA's Golden 50 Award in 2008.

He married Bettie Harmon and had one son.
