1930-31 R.H. Nichols Vernon Record

R.H. Nichols, publisher of the Vernon Daily Record and 53rd president, was born in Lampasas where he attended high school and began newspaper work as the devil on the Lampasas Leader.

He later worked on the weekly Temple Mirror as hand compositor then at the Texas Printing Company and Paxton and Evans Company at Fort Worth.

He was a make-up man for the Fort Worth Star when it changed to the Star-Telegram. After serving as a printer at the Eldorado (Okla.) Courier, he landed a job as a reporter and solicitor at the Vernon Record that led him to become part owner and editor of what was then a weekly.

Nichols left the Record in 1919 to publish the Amarillo Daily Tribune, but decided in 1923 he couldn’t stay away from Vernon. So he returned, bought back The Record and made it into a daily in 1925.
