Sam Braswell, 45th president, purchased The Clarendon News on July 19, 1917. Braswell instituted a prohibition on front-page ads, a policy that has endured into the 21st century at The Clarendon Enterprise.

Braswell served as president of Panhandle Press Association in 1920-21.

Braswell led the News to win many awards in the 1920s for advertising and job printing during annual Texas Press Association conventions.

In 1942 Braswell turned daily operations of the News over to the News Publishing Co. In 1944 he sold the paper to two local businessmen.
