Henry Edwards, 38th president, was born near Tyler on Sept. 26, 1871. As a small boy on a farm, he found time to write news items for the Tyler newspapers.

He attended the Summer Hill Select School in East Texas and did postgraduate work under a private tutor from Vanderbilt University. He taught four years in the Summer Hill School.

In 1903 he purchased a half interest in the Troup Banner, acquiring full ownership in 1919 with his son, Joseph Emerson. In 1907 he purchased the Lindale Reporter and in 1908 the Plainview News. He owned the former six years and the latter three years. In 1925 he established the Tyler Journal.

Edwards joined Texas Press Association in 1910. He edited “History of the Texas Press Association.” His three children also worked in newspapers.
