1912-13 W.C. Edwards Denton Record Chronicle

William C. "Will" Edwards, 34th president, was born in Courtland, Ala., Aug. 1, 1879, and moved to Texas in 1883. He entered the newspaper business as a cub reporter on the Denton Record-Chronicle in 1896. His family bought and consolidated the Denton Chronicle and the Denton County Record to form the weekly Denton Record and Chronicle. The newspaper went daily on Aug. 3, 1903. Edwards later became editor and chief stockholder of the newspaper. He joined Texas Press Association in 1905.

Edwards served in the Texas House of Representatives representing Denton County from Jan. 9, 1923, to Jan. 13, 1925, and lacked only a few votes to have been elected lieutenant governor in 1924. A Mexia Daily News story published Jan. 15, 1924, bore the headline, “Editor Edwards Will Run for Lieut. Governor.” A Hearne Democrat story published Feb. 22, 1924, bore the headline, "Denton Publisher Seeks Lieutenant Governorship." On p. 352 of “History of Denton County, From Its Beginning to 1960," Edwards is mentioned as "Round-a-bout" editor of Denton Record-Chronicle who ran for Lieutenant Governor and narrowly lost second primary to Barry Miller in 1924.

He was publisher of the Washington (D.C.) Herald in 1927 and held a managerial position with the Georgian, at Atlanta, while retaining his interest in the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Edwards married Nettie Williams in 1899. They had four children.
