Ron Filkins

Ron Filkins, 57, publisher of The Kentucky Standard in Bardstown, Ky., died June 25, 2008, at his home. He collapsed after going outside to retrieve the morning newspaper.

After graduate school at the University of Iowa, he moved to Texas and served as news editor and later as editor of The Perryton Herald.

In 1985, he moved to newspaper management, serving Southern Newspapers and the Walls family of newspapers for 10 years. He was publisher of the Moore County News-Press for four years and then published the Seguin Gazette-Enterprise.

He joined Landmark Community Newspapers Inc. in 1996, first as publisher of the Perry County News in Tell City, Ind., and manager of the Tell City printing plant. He went to The Kentucky Standard in 2002.

Jeannie Millender

Jeannie Millender, 44, died June 20, 2008, at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Millender was the former managing editor of the Plano Insider, a free weekly newspaper for Star Community Newspapers. She also served as photography editor for the Frisco Enterprise and worked on the Web sites for all the Star Community Newspapers. Her start with the company came in the classified sales department.
