The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is looking for a versatile, digitally-focused assistant engagement editor/columnist to play a key role in our mission to reach and engage diverse audiences using multiple formats. You must be an expert at using a variety of digital skills and platforms to produce and distribute journalism that holds leaders accountable and provokes debate about issues important to the future of one of the country’s fastest-growing metro areas.

You must understand the science of readership and engagement, including using analytics to help determine what content resonates with which audiences.

You must be able to contribute timely, compelling commentary in the form of columns, short takes, editorials and social media posts across multiple formats, from the written word to podcasts to videos. You must ensure that your work reaches the largest possible digital audience by consistently writing compelling headlines and relevant SEO metadata and using social media tools such as CrowdTangle to help distribute it.

You should feel at home both behind and in front of the camera, be comfortable with public speaking and capable of organizing public events that promote community engagement.

This position is a member of the Star-Telegram’s editorial board. Although the role is primarily focused on engaging with audiences on digital platforms, you will also help select and prepare content for the printed editorial pages. It’s essential that you are comfortable using content management systems and other technology tools.

Your work will be evaluated according to its impact on the community, as measured by reach (page views and video views) and other engagement- and loyalty-related metrics, as well as an unrelenting adherence to McClatchy’s mission pillars.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

Ability to analyze and understand audience data such as page views, time on site, referral sources and “shares and likes.”
Demonstrated ability to use social media platforms such as Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit to engage with audiences.
Demonstrated ability to stay up to date with the latest technologies, audience trends and associated skills.
Advanced writing, communication and interpersonal skills.

The content editor plays a crucial part in coaching reporters to put our readers at the center of everything we do. He or she will discuss every story idea with a reporter or visual journalist, asking who would care about the story. When necessary, the content editor must be the one to reject ideas or stories that do not fit McClatchy’s mission – freeing the reporter to spend time on work that matters to our readers. The editor will also monitor his or her reporters’ progress, ensuring everyone has the training and coaching needed to succeed in the new audience-focused mission.
