Wood County Monitor @ Mineola

The Mineola Monitor was established in 1876 by D.C. Williams, making it the first newspaper in the area. It chronicled the happenings of the progressive railroad town in its heyday. In 1907 the Monitor was purchased by J.A. Thomas who became Texas Press Association's 33rd president in 1911. Over the decades, several competing publications have been absorbed by the Monitor, a weekly paper. Twice in its history it was published as a daily paper. Numerous owners have come and gone and with them most of the paper's history was destroyed or discarded. The Mineola Monitor is owned today by ASP Westward. For many years the office was located at one of the main intersections in town, Highways 80 and 69, and is now in an old doctor's office. Founded: 1876
