The Galveston County Daily News @ Galveston

Texas oldest paper is The Galveston County Daily News, established April 11, 1842, while Texas was still a Republic and before railways and telegraph lines came to the state. The News claims to be the only newspaper in the United States that has operated under three flags the Republic of Texas, the United States and the Confederacy. The News installed the first telephone in the state of Texas in its offices in Galveston. The first dispatch over the Atlantic cable was printed in The News in 1886. The News built (in Galveston in 1883) the first plant in the United States devoted exclusively to newspaper publishing. Today, The Galveston County Daily News is published in a modern plant on the northern edge of Galveston Island. Founded: 1842
