S.D. “Denver” Chesnutt, 44th president, was born in Lufkin and as a boy began work as a printer, never quitting a print shop until his death. His second print shop job was in Nacogdoches.

He entered the newspaper business at the Lufkin News. He was associate editor of the Beeville Bee and manager of the Hallettsville Herald for short periods. In 1911, he purchased the Kennedy Advance.

He married Josephine Wood in 1912. They had four children. Chesnutt joined Texas Press Association in 1913.
